RACHEL GETTIGNG MARRIED is Johnathan Demme's Oscar-nominated film featuring an extremely unusual approach to musical scoring. All of the musical score, written by Donald Harrison and Zafer Tawil, was played live on the set and recorded simultaneously with the actors' dialogue scenes. This created a distinctive authenticity, as well as many post-production dillemas.
The sound design challenge was to create an audio environment that highlited the naturalism of the music while not distracting from the human drama. Eschewing traditional notions of sonic realism in film, Leyh worked with mixers Tony Villante and Paul Urmson to create a dynamic surround environment that accentuated the physical spaces and created a emotionally authentic stage for the character's stories to unfold. And there were also some very nice dog sounds.
